Senor Scores 1,000th Point, Winning Streak Snapped

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped as UW-Parkside used a late first half run to pull away from the Hawks, 82-61, on Thursday (Feb. 9) night in Kenosha, Wis.

With 9:43 left in the second half, senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) became the 41st player in program to score 1,000 career points. He joins senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) as the current Hawks in the 1,000-point club.

Despite the loss, the Hawks (20-5, 10-4 GLVC) maintained their one-game lead in the GLVC West as Truman State (17-7, 9-5 GLVC) also dropped a 21-point decision to Lewis, 94-73, on Thursday night.

The Hawks started the game in a promising way, getting a basket by senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC), a 3-pointer by Senor and fast-break dunk by McGaughey to take an early 7-2 lead.

The Rangers (19-4, 11-3 GLVC) took their first lead of the game with 12:23 left in the first half on a layup by Joe Borcia before the Hawks took the lead right back on a put-back by senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) and a layin by senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan).

Parkside once again regained the lead and led by five when junior wing Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the deficit to 20-19.

That's when the Rangers took command of the game. UW-Parkside went on an 18-4 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 38-23 lead into halftime. The Hawks were 1-for-6 with three turnovers and went 2-for-6 from the line in that stretch.

In the second half, the Hawks never got closer than 15 points as the Rangers shot 57 percent from the field in each half. Meanwhile, they limited the Hawks to a season low 39.6 percent (21-for-53) rate. Quincy also got beat on the glass, 38-26, and points in the paint, 50-26.

Washington led the Hawks with 15 points while McGaughey chipped in 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senor scored 10 points. Tagarelli was limited by foul trouble all game and was held to single digits for the first time since Jan. 30, 2016.

Alexander Brown paced the Rangers with 19 points and five assists. Kendale McCullum scored 12 points with six rebounds and five assists.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Saturday (Feb. 11) to take on Lewis (16-8, 11-3 GLVC), which has won five straight games. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
