Tagarelli Hits 1,000 Points In Bounce-Back Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team turned in one of its best all-around efforts of the season in knocking off host Lewis, 82-76, on Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill.

The win comes on the heels of an 82-61 defeat at UW-Parkside, earning a split through two of the top teams in the GLVC East. The Hawks (21-5, 11-4 GLVC) remain atop the West Division standings, one game ahead of Truman, which beat the Rangers on Saturday.

Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC) became the 42nd player in program history to score 1,000 career points, reaching the mark on his first basket of the second half. The senior had a game-high 24 points on 11-for-20 shooting. The milestone came just one game after senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) also reached 1,000 points.

On Saturday, neither team held more than a five-point lead in a first half that saw eight tie scores and eight lead changes.

Capel Henshaw hit a 3-pointer with 11:53 to play in the first half to give the Flyers (16-9, 11-4 GLVC) a 24-19 lead. The Hawks then hit three straight 3-pointers – one each by senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan), senior center Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.) and sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) – to tie the game at 28-28.

The Hawks then went up by five on two separate occasions before the Flyers trimmed the lead to 45-43 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Hawks locked in defensively by switching to a zone defense. The change forced the ball out of the hands of the Flyers' isolation specialists, Miles Simelton and Delaney Blaylock, who combined for 30 points in the game. The Hawks allowed just two field goals in the first eight-plus minutes of the second half to push their lead to 59-49 at one point.

Each time the Flyers would rally down the stretch the Hawks would answer with a bucket. Nick Norton's basket with 10:35 remaining cut it to four, but Hinton scored in transition to push it back to six. Cristen Wilson had the lead down to 63-61 with seven minutes left, but Tagarelli dropped in a layup and Washington followed with a 3-pointer in the corner off a kick out by Senor to make it 68-61.

Senor's 3-pointer with 2:08 left gave the Hawks a 77-68 lead and the visitors went 5-for-6 from the line in the final minute to close it out.

McGaughey contributed a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, joining four other Hawks in double figures. Tagarelli added four rebounds and four steals to his 24 points. Washington hit four 3-pointers for 12 points and Senor and Hinton had 11 points each.

Senor and senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) combined for 12 assists against just two turnovers to kick-start the offense.

The Hawks shot 50 percent (31-for-62) from the field and held the Flyers to a 46 percent (31-for-68) mark. Quincy had 17 assists on 31 made field goals.

Wilson finished with a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead Lewis.

Quincy will return to Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Feb. 16) at 7:30 p.m. to take on Rockhurst.
