#10 Loyola Chicago Hits Past Hawks in MIVA Tilt

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team suffered its second straight Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association defeat to a ranked opponent on Saturday (Feb. 4) night, falling at No. 10 Loyola Chicago, 25-17, 25-17, 25-12, at Gentile Arena.

The Hawks have now played five teams ranked in the top 15 of the AVCA Division I-II national coaches' poll. They also played Missouri Baptist, which was ranked No. 1 in the NAIA ranks.

The Ramblers (6-3, 2-0 MIVA), who have won two of the last three NCAA championships, hit .463 in the match while limiting the Hawks to a .085 mark.

The Hawks led Set 1, 14-13, but the Ramblers scored the next eight points on the serve of Jeff Jendryk, who paced the home team with 11 kills on 14 swings (.786) with no errors.

In Set 2, the teams traded sideouts early on with the Hawks taking a 4-3 lead on a kill by junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward). Loyola responded with the next three points, again on Jendryk's serve, and the Ramblers never gave up the lead after that point.

Sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) was a bright spot for the Hawks, putting down 10 kills (.471) against just two errors. Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 19 assists with a team-high five digs, while Winter had five kills and four digs.

Paul Narup joined Jendryk in double figures with 10 kills on 11 attacks (.909) with no errors.

The Hawks continue MIVA play next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11) for a pair of 7 p.m. matches at Pepsi Arena against Grand Canyon.
