Hawks Win First Two Sets, Can't Finish Off Lopes

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team stormed out to a two-set lead over visiting Grand Canyon, but the Lopes recorded two-point wins in the final three sets to close out a narrow 17-25, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-13 win over the Hawks in MIVA action on Friday (Feb. 10) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (3-7, 1-3 MIVA) hit a blistering .535 (26 kills, three errors, 43 attacks) in the first two sets combined and they also had just four service errors in those frames. Sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) and senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had eight kills each over the first two sets.

Quincy fought off three set points in the third game, getting a kill and a block by freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy) in those three points. After a GCU timeout, the Lopes scored the next two points to get the win.

The Hawks batted away two set points in the fourth set with kills by Kelso and junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward), but Drake Silbernagel's kill evened the match at two sets apiece.

The Hawks led the fifth set, 5-3 after Siebum's kill, but the Lopes (6-5, 4-1 MIVA) scored the next five points to take an 8-5 lead. QU still trailed, 13-11, before junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) put down a kill, followed by a GCU attacking error, tied the game at 13-13. The momentum was short-lived as Grand Canyon got a kill from Cullen Mosher and the Hawks ended the match with an attack error.

The Hawks hit .360 as a team, their highest output since March 12, 2016. They limited the Lopes to a .277 mark. Quincy also had a 13-3 edge in total blocks.

Siebum finished with a season-high 20 kills (.351). Kelso added 16 kills (.538) and seven blocks on his most effective and efficient match of the season. Winter chipped in 11 kills. Fanfulik dished out 52 assists and recorded seven blocks (two solo). Sophomore libero Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) had a team-high eight digs.

Mosher led Grand Canyon with 17 kills (.382) and four aces. Silbernagel and Shalev Saada had 12 kills each. Sky Engleman had a match-high 13 digs.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday (Feb. 11) at 7 p.m. at Pepsi Arena.
