Comeback Comes Up Short Against Grand Canyon

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team tried to exact revenge on Grand Canyon on Saturday (Feb. 11) night, but came up short, falling to the Lopes, 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-21, in MIVA action at Pepsi Arena.

Last night, the Hawks (3-8, 1-4 MIVA) beat Grand Canyon (7-5, 5-1 MIVA) in the first two sets before the Lopes won the final three. On Saturday, GCU won the first two games in commanding fashion and the Hawks took Set 3, but ultimately could not come up with the win in the fourth set.

The Lopes hit .500 on their way to their first two set wins as the Hawks struggled to keep up with Ashton King and Drake Silbernagel, who combined for 15 kills and no hitting errors in the first two frames.

The Hawks turned the momentum in the third set, though neither team was able to get separation until the Hawks took a 21-18 lead after a kill by sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney). GCU scored the next two points after a timeout, but sophomore Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) put down a kill and Shalev Saada had a hitting error to make it 23-20.

An attacking error by Luke Turner gave the Hawks set point at 24-21 and sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) came up with the finishing kill at 25-22 to give the Hawks the win.

Set 4 saw six tie scores, but the Hawks were never able to take the lead. The final tie came at 15-15 on a kill by freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy), but the Lopes scored two straight points and did not give up the lead.

Siebum led the Hawks with 11 kills (.139) while senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) added 10 kills (.471). Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) posted a double-double with 28 assists, 16 digs, five kills (.273) and three blocks – two solo.

Sheets had four kills (.300) and a team-leading six blocks. Rogan had four kills (.300), 14 assists and five blocks.

Silbernagel led Grand Canyon with 18 kills and no attacking errors (.783). Sky Engleman had 12 digs.

The Hawks will return to the court on Friday (Feb. 17) when they travel to No. 1 Ohio State. First serve will go up at 7 p.m. Eastern in Columbus.
