Walters Homers Again, Hawks Hold Off Florida Tech, 8-5

QUINCY, Ill. – Senior second baseman Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) continued a string of five consecutive games with a home run as the Hawks held off Florida Tech, 8-5, on Sunday (Feb. 26) afternoon to go 2-1 on a weekend road trip to Dahlonega, Ga.

In the top of the ninth and the Hawks leading 5-4, Walters hit his sixth home run in a five-game stretch – a three-run shot that pushed Quincy's lead to four runs, 8-4.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the first inning as senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) doubled and scored on an error.

Reid Neal gave the Panthers (9-5) a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning before sophomore Nolan Snyder (St. Louis, Mo.) tied the game in the second with a solo blast to center field – his first home run of the year.

The Hawks regained the lead in the third on a run-scoring double play after the top three hitters in Quincy's order – Klages, senior Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) and Walters – drew walks to start the inning.

John Sternagel gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth off QU starter Mark Niebrugge (Effingham, Ill.).

Quincy again regained the lead the following inning on a two-run single by junior J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.).

Freshman southpaw Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) came on in the fifth inning to relieve Niebrugge and was effective in 4 1/3 innings. After walking the first batter he faced, Martin set down five in a row before a two-out single in the sixth broke the string.

He kept the game at 5-4 until the ninth when Klages and Miles both reached with base hits before Walters sent a 1-0 pitch over the wall for three insurance runs.

Neal hit his second homer of the game in the bottom of the ninth, but junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) slammed the door for his first save of the year.

Martin earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one. Niebrugged gave up four runs on five hits in his four-inning start.

Tyler Deel (2-2) took the loss for Florida Tech, allowing four earned runs in four innings. He struck out 10 batters while Drew Beyer added six strikeouts in relief.

Klages was perfect on the afternoon, going 3-for-3 with a double, two walks and four runs scored. DeMuri was 2-for-5 and drove in two runs and Miles went 2-for-4 with a walk.

The Hawks open up a 17-game homestand next Saturday (March 4) with a noon doubleheader against Emporia State at QU Stadium.
