Teams Combine For Nine Homers In Saturday Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University baseball team picked up a split in its home opener on Saturday (March 4) afternoon at QU Stadium, defeating Emporia State, 8-7, in the opener before falling to the Hornets in the nightcap, 19-7.

The teams combined for nine home runs on the day with the Hawks (6-3) clubbing four of those.

GAME 1: No. 15 Quincy 8, No. 13 Emporia State 7

Senior center fielder Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) got the Hawks started quickly in Game 1, blasting an opposite-field home run down the left field line to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, senior lefty Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) was dealing early on, striking out six through the first three innings.

QU added two in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by senior second baseman Jack Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) and an RBI single from junior left fielder J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.).

The Hornets (12-3) scored four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead that Quincy quickly erased in the bottom of the inning. Junior designated hitter Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) led off with a triple and scored on an RBI hit by sophomore right fielder Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.).

The Hawks scored four runs with two outs in the fifth. Sophomore third baseman T.J. Tamaccio (Boca Raton, Fla.) started the rally with a solo home run. Wehde and Purcell followed with singles before an RBI hit by junior first baseman Matt Hilmes (Carlyle, Ill.) made it 6-4. Sophomore shortstop Carter Naughton (Mundelein, Ill.) then rapped a two-run double to give QU an 8-4 lead.

Ryan McBroom's two-run homer in the sixth cut the lead to 8-6 before sophomore Karl Hirsch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) escaped the inning. He then worked a scoreless seventh inning and freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) pitched a scoreless eighth to give way to closer Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa). Crawford allowed a walk, double and sacrifice fly, but got Wade Hanna to fly out to end the game.

Haynes (2-0) earned the win, allowing six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out 10. Crawford earned his second save of the season. Seth Holman (3-1) took his first loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Five Hawks had two hits in the game as the hosts out-hit the visitors, 13-10.

GAME 2: No. 13 Emporia State 19, No. 15 Quincy 7

The Hawks trailed Game 2, 13-0 after 1.5 innings and were never able to climb out of that hole.

DeMuri powered a solo homer in the second and Walters and DeMuri drove in runs in the third to make it 14-3. Senior catcher David Hayes (Stanton, Ky.) hit a solo home run in the fourth, but the Hornets tacked on five more in the sixth to remove all doubt.

Freshman left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) took the loss (2-1), allowing six runs in his one inning of work. Jordan Plank (3-1) earned his third win of the year, surrendering four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Senior catcher Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI while DeMuri was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Walters and Miles had two hits each.

The Hawks and Hornets will complete their three-game set with a single game on Sunday (March 5) at QU Stadium. First pitch is set for noon.
