Walters Hits Grand Slam, Solo Homer In Defeat

QUINCY, Ill. – Senior second baseman Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) hit two home runs, but the No. 9-ranked Quincy University baseball team fell to host North Georgia, 12-6, on Friday (Feb. 24) afternoon in Dahlonega, Ga.

Walters hit a solo blast in the first inning and a grand slam in the third to give the Hawks (3-2) a 5-2 lead, but the Nighthawks scored in every inning from the second to the sixth, including a six-run spot in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 6-6 tie.

Both pitching staffs struggled throwing strikes, combining for 17 walks in the game.

After Walters' solo homer with two down in the first, the Nighthawks (8-3) scored a pair in the second inning on a two-run home run by Michael Bell.

Two walks and a hit batter brought up Walters with one out in the third inning and the slugger pounded a 1-0 pitch to right-center to give the Hawks a three-run lead.

UNG scored single runs in the third and fourth, two in the fifth and tagged QU for six in the sixth after the Hawks tied the game on an RBI single by senior outfielder Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) in the top of the inning.

Senior lefty Hunter Haynes (Mexico, Mo.) got the no-decision for the Hawks, allowing six runs in five innings, walking five against one strikeout. Junior right-hander Nick Stroud (Dalton City, Ill.) was saddled with the loss after relieving Haynes in the sixth.

Freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) and junior Brendan Saak (Belleville, Ill.) each tossed hitless innings of relief with Sanchez striking out the side in the seventh.

Dallas Deavers earned the win for the Nighthawks, tossing 3 1/3 hitless innings of relief to finish the game.

Walters and Miles combined for five of Quincy's six hits. Walters was 3-for-5 with five RBI while Miles went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore outfielder Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) was the only other Hawk with a hit.

Bell finished the game 2-for-4 with six RBI for the hosts.

The Hawks will return to the field in Dahlonega, Ga. on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT, taking on Albany State.
