Hawks Two-Hit Tiffin in 10-0 Rout

QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University baseball coach Josh Rabe won his 200th game on Saturday (Feb. 18) in the first game of a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan, 4-2.

The Hawks went on to win Game 2, 14-6, on Saturday, and now Rabe has penciled in win number 202 with a 10-0 rout of Tiffin on Sunday (Feb. 19) in the final of four games in Millington, Tenn. this weekend.

Quincy (3-1) finished the weekend with three wins after opening the season with a 7-1 loss to Saint Joseph's on Friday.

The outcome of Sunday's game was never in doubt as three QU pitchers combined on a two-hitter and a three-run homer in the first inning by senior second baseman Jake Walters (St. Louis, Mo.) ignited the Hawks' offense.

Freshman left-hander Riley Martin (Salem, Ill.) made his first collegiate start on the mound and did not disappoint. He tossed five innings of one-hit ball, facing just three batters over the minimum.

Freshman William Sanchez (Miami, Fla.) and junior Cole Crawford (Wilton, Iowa) each threw one inning of shutout relief.

Offensively, the Hawks scored five times in the bottom of the first. Senior Jack Klages (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior outfielder Dominic Miles (Quincy, Ill.) started the inning with walks before Walters powered a three-run bomb to start the rout. Sophomore outfielder Chandler Purcell (Waterloo, Ill.) and sophomore shortstop Carter Naughton (Mundelein, Ill.) also had RBI singles in the inning as the Hawks sent 11 batters to the plate.

After Walters reached on an error to start the second inning, junior outfielder J.C. DeMuri (Manchester, Mo.) followed with an RBI triple. An RBI single by junior catcher Troy Wehde (St. Charles, Mo.) made it 7-0.

The Hawks tacked on three more in the fifth inning with RBI hits coming from Klages and Walters.

Ricky Krieger took the loss for the Dragons, giving up six earned runs in one-plus inning.

Walters and DeMuri had two hits apiece with Walters driving in four runs. The Hawks pounded out nine hits, including three for extra bases, in the mercy-rule shortened game.

The Hawks will now head to Dahlonega, Ga. for three games against non-region opponents next weekend (Feb. 24-26), beginning Friday against host North Georgia.
