Hawks Finish Sixth at GLVC Championships

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University swimming team turned in an impressive showing at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships this week, finishing in sixth place out of 10 teams at the meet in just their second season of competition.

The Hawks improved their standing by two places from last year's conference championships when they finished in eighth place.

In Saturday's finals, the Hawks participated in four events and picked up their second NCAA provisional mark. Freshman Sydney Zimdars (Whitewater, Wis.) swam the 1,650 freestyle race in 17:34.49, beating the NCAA "B" cut mark by nearly five seconds. She finished seventh in the event. Zimdars joins freshman Eboni McCray (Avondale, Ariz./Agua Fria), who hit the "B" cut in the 50 freestyle on Wednesday.

Sophomore Brittany Walenczyk (Waukesha, Wis./West) also scored for the Hawks in the 1650 freestyle, coming in 11^th with a time of 17:49.66.

The Hawks' top finish on Saturday came in the 200 backstroke where sophomore McKenna Brown (Minot, N.D./Minot-Magic City) finished just off the podium in fourth with a time of 2:04.46. Senior Briana Flores (Lakeland, Fla./Tenoroc/Indian River State) was eighth with a time of 2:08.51.

McCray swam the 100 freestyle in 52.36 seconds to finish in 10^th place.

Finally, the Hawks had an outstanding pace in the 400 freestyle relay, just missing the NCAA's provisional cut by 0.50 seconds. The team of McCray, Flores, freshman Athena Leex (Kopavofur, Iceland) and Walenczyk finished fifth, touching the pad in 3:31.64.

Drury won the conference championship for the third time in four years, out-pacing Truman State and Indianapolis on the women's side. The Panthers also won the men's championship.
