QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team defeated Bellarmine University 1-0 despite tough weather conditions Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 8). The Hawks and the Knights needed an overtime period to come to a final decision.
The Hawks scored in the third minute of overtime after a scramble in front of the Bellarmine net was put away by
Katie Heiligenstein (Wentzville, MO / St. Dominic) for her fourth goal of the season.
Both the Hawks and the Knights were forced to adjust their play based on the weather conditions. A downpour of rain forced large amounts of water to sit on top of the artificial turf and had an effect on the game.
The Hawks offense still managed to put up 17 shots with eight on goal.
Bellarmine tallied four shots on goal, three in the first half but
Megan Swanson (St. Charles, MO./ St. Dominic) made all three saves.
At the end of the first 45 minutes of action the Hawks and the Knights remained tied at 0-0.
QU had a pair of chances to score early in the second half but both were turned away by the Bellarmine goaltender.
Neither team was able to score despite several chances. The game would have to be decided in overtime.
In the third minute of overtime
Natalie Quisenberry lined up for a corner kick. Quisenberry (St. Louis, MO / Lafayette) sent her cross into the box and a scramble ensued. A shot by
Mary Maloney (O'Fallon, MO / St. Dominic) was saved by Bellarmine and ended up with
Katie Heiligenstein. Heiligenstein took her shot into an open net to give the Hawks the victory.
QU improved to 10-2, 8-1 in the GLVC. Bellarmine fell to 4-3-3, 3-3-3 in the GLVC. The Hawks return home to face the University of Indianapolis Friday (Hawktober 13) at Legends Stadium at 5:00 p.m.
