Women's Soccer Wins Sixth Straight

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's soccer team picked up its sixth straight victory with a 1-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Senior Day Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 15).

The Hawks offense was on display early as QU tallied four shots in the first four minutes.  QU totaled 11 shots in the first 17 minutes as the Hawks had the ball in Wisconsin-Parkside's half of the field for the majority of the first half.

Despite 15 shots in the first half, including seven by senior captain Mackenzie Rief (Wentzville, MO./ St. Dominic), the Hawks were unable to take a lead.

In the 51st minute, Rief made 65-yard run from deep in the Hawks zone all the way to the Rangers 18 yard box.  Rief worked her way through the Parkside defense and took a shot from eight yards away on the left side of the box.  Rief's shot beat the Rangers goalie to put the Hawks up 1-0.  It was Rief's team-leading sixth goal of the season and second on the weekend.

The Hawks had another great chance to score off a corner kick in the 73rd minute.  Allison Birke (O'Fallon, MO./ St. Dominic) rose up to win the head ball off the cross and Birke's header just cleared the crossbar and went out of bounds.

In the 87th, Megan Swanson (St. Charles, MO./ St. Dominic) made her second save of the game to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Hawks.

With 20 seconds remaining the Rangers lined up for a corner kick and their final opportunity to tie the game.  Several shots were deflected inside the box but the Hawks came up with a team save just before the final whistle to preserve the 1-0 win.

Swanson picked up her ninth shutout of the season.  Her 10 shutouts this season are tied third-most all-time in a single season.

Swanson's streak of six consecutive shutouts ties the QU record for most consecutive shutouts.

With two more shutouts this weekend Swanson moves into second place all-time in career shutouts (33) behind former First Team All-American Jodi Chapie (42).
