Hawks Fall To Third Straight Nationally-Ranked Team

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped its final match, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, to No. 4 Long Beach State at the season-opening Asics Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. on Saturday (Jan. 7) evening. The Hawks played three nationally-ranked teams at the event.

The Hawks (0-3) had a 7-6 lead in the first set against the 49ers (3-0), but LBSU went on a 4-0 run and never trailed after that point. In Set 2, the Hawks only briefly had an early lead after a kill by freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy), but a 6-0 run by the 49ers gave them a 7-2 advantage they would not surrender.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the early portions of the third set, which saw 12 tie scores and six lead changes. QU held a 13-11 lead after consecutive attacking errors by Scott Stephanoff, but Long Beach rallied for an 8-1 run that put the match away.

Senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) led the Hawks with nine kills (.375). Sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) had seven kills (.045) and a match-high nine digs.

While the 49ers had only a slim lead in kills, 34-32, there was a wide disparity in hitting percentage (.320 to .125) and blocks (11-2) in favor of Long Beach.

The Hawks will return to the floor for a pair of matches on Friday (Jan. 13) in the first day of the Culver-Stockton Invitational in Canton, Mo. They will play Robert Morris at 4:30 p.m. and host Culver-Stockton at 6:30 p.m.
