Hawks Fall in Straight Sets To NAIA #1 Missouri Baptist

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened its home slate on Friday (Jan. 20) night by welcoming the NAIA's top-ranked team, Missouri Baptist, to Pepsi Arena. The Spartans, the two-time defending national champions, defeated the Hawks in straight sets, 26-24, 25-19, 25-15.

The Hawks (0-4) are still eyeing their first win of the season and they will not have to wait long for their next chance. Quincy will square off with Emmanuel (Ga.) on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Pepsi Arena.

Friday's first set saw 15 tie scores and five lead changes as the teams battled back and forth, playing into extra points. The Hawks trailed, 23-21, but got two straight points on an MBU error followed by a solo by senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) to tie the game. The teams then traded service errors before Cameron Hibbler's kill gave MBU the win.

The second set was tied at 11-11, but the Spartans (2-1) scored the next five points to take command as Quincy was not able to get closer than two points. In the third set, it was an 8-0 run by the visitors that turned a 5-4 deficit into a 13-4 disadvantage for Quincy.

Missouri Baptist out-hit Quincy, .221 to .000, and also led in kills (30-25) and aces (6-2).

Kelso led the Hawks with eight kills (.143) while junior Shane McAdams (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge/San Diego City) chipped in six kills (.556) against just one error.

Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) handed out 18 assists, while Kelso had a team-high nine blocks. Mico Janicijevic led the Spartans with 13 kills (.367).
