Hawks Serve Their Way To First Win of 2017

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2017 season on Saturday (Jan. 21) morning by knocking off Emmanuel, 25-20, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (1-4) smacked 16 service aces in the match, their most since they also had 16 in a win over Rust on March 8, 2011.

It was their 16-2 advantage in aces that helped propel the Hawks past the Lions (1-3) on Saturday as the visitors out-hit the home team, .262 to .202. Quincy still managed more kills, 49-35, and led in points scored, 70-43.

Quincy never trailed in either of the first two sets as sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) had seven of his match-high 12 kills (.409) in the first two frames.

The Hawks were not able to close out the match in the third set as the Lions used a 4-0 run to get to set point at 24-19. Quincy fought off two set points, but Caleb Bonaventure's kill extended the match for Emmanuel.

The Lions held a 9-8 lead in Set 4 before Siebum rattled off a pair of service aces during a 5-0 service run that put the Hawks ahead for good. Junior Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) had his only kill of the match to cap the win.

Junior Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) joined Siebum in double figures with 10 kills (.273). Freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy) chipped in seven kills (.308).

Siebum led the Hawks' service attack with four aces with junior Shane McAdams (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge/San Diego City) adding three. Senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and sophomore Noah Randall (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had two aces each.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Wednesday (Jan. 25) at 7 p.m. when they take on Loras at Pepsi Arena.
