Hawks Take Set Off #9 Stanford, But Fall in Season Openers

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team opened its season for the second straight year at the Asics Invitational, hosted by UC-Santa Barbara. The Hawks dropped their first two matches of the season on Friday (Jan. 6), falling to No. 14 CSUN in straight sets before taking the first set against No. 9 Stanford, but absorbing a 3-1 setback.
 
The Hawks (0-2) will finish their California trip on Saturday (Jan. 7) when they take on No. 4 Long Beach State at 6 p.m. Central.
 
No. 14 Cal State-Northridge def. Quincy – 25-16, 25-19, 25-23
 
The Hawks were not able to slow down the Matadors in their first match of the day as Cal State-Northridge hit .378, picking up 38 kills with just 10 errors on 74 attacks.
 
Quincy led Set 1, 4-2, after a kill by senior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), but the Matadors went on an 8-2 run after that to take the lead for good in the opening frame.
 
CSUN never trailed in Set 2 after scoring the first five points in the game with Sam Porter serving.
 
The Hawks trailed by as many as seven points in Set 3, but chipped away at the deficit, tying the game at 20-20 on a kill by Kelso. Then a double block by sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) and freshman Omari Wheeler (North Las Vegas, Nev./Legacy) and a service ace by junior Shane McAdams (Tucson, Ariz./Ironwood Ridge/San Diego City) gave the Hawks a 22-20 advantage.
 
They were not able to capitalize on their run as CSUN scored the next three points to regain the lead at 23-22. After a service error by the Matadors tied the set, back-to-back errors by Quincy ended the match.
 
Sophomore David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) led the Hawks with nine kills (.034) and five digs while Kelso added seven kills (.267) to go with two blocks. McAdams finished with four kills (.333) while Sheets chipped in four blocks. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 13 assists.
 
The Hawks hit .087 as a team and compiled 26 kills. Dimitar Kalchev led the Matadors with 11 kills (.526) and four aces. Porter had 32 assists.
 
No. 9 Standford def. Quincy – 20-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-14
 
The Hawks earned their first set win of the season in their second match on Friday and it came against one of the nation's top teams. The Hawks hit .286 in the opening set, during which they never trailed after bursting out to a 6-2 lead. Kelso and Sheets capped the run with a double block.
 
Quincy led by as many as six points in the set, 22-16, after the first of Fanfulik's four service aces. Sheets closed the frame with a kill.
 
Quincy's momentum would be short-lived as the Cardinal held the Hawks to a minus-.286 hitting percentage in the second set. Stanford hit over .400 in each of the final three sets.
 
In the third set, the Hawks had a 13-8 lead after Fanfulik had three aces in a four-point service run. But the Cardinal climbed back in, using a 6-0 run to take a 15-14 lead. The Hawks still led, 21-20 in the set after McAdams' kill, but the Cardinal scored the next four points and eventually took a commanding 2-1 lead after a kill by Matt Klassen.
 
Stanford never trailed in the fourth set as they pulled away down the stretch after starting with a 5-1 lead.
 
Siebum and Kelso led the Hawks with eight kills apiece with Wheeler and McAdams chipped in seven each. Fanfulik had four blocks and four digs to go with his 27 assists and four aces. Kelso's five digs were a team high.
 
The Hawks hit .186, but Stanford was successful at a .360 clip. Jordan Ewert led the Cardinal with 12 kills (.500) and four aces.
