Hawks Overcome Deficit, But Come Up Short At Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team came as close as one point late in Saturday's (Jan. 21) game at Maryville, but the Hawks' offense stalled in the final minutes as the Saints pulled out a 59-51 win at Moloney Arena.

The Hawks (4-15, 1-8 GLVC) withstood an early 16-0 run by the Saints (7-9, 3-6 GLVC) and kept the game within a single-digit margin, but they were never able to tie or take the lead.

After sophomore Sarah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis.) scored the first basket of the game, the Saints scored the next 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers to take a 16-2 lead. The Hawks responded with their own 7-0 run, started by a couple buckets by senior guard Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg/Moraine Valley CC), and trailed 18-11 after the first quarter.

Quincy had the deficit down to as few as four points in the second quarter after a jumper by sophomore wing Jessica Rabas (De Pere, Wis.). Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) hit two free throws right before halftime to keep the Hawks within 33-27 at the intermission.

The Saints built their lead back to double-digits midway through the third quarter, but the Hawks cranked up their defense to get back in the game with a 9-0 run that spanned seven minutes, 20 seconds over the third and fourth quarters. In that stretch, the Hawks forced the Saints to miss eight straight shots.

A 3-pointer by freshman guard Jessica Merino (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) with 8:39 to play pulled the Hawks within one point, 45-44.

The Saints then answered with four straight points before Schumacher's layin cut the deficit to 49-46. Senior guard Nikia Edom (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) knocked down a triple with 4:25 to play to make it 52-49.

The Hawks then forced the Saints to miss four straight attempts from the field, but they could only get it to 52-51 for their effort, the lone QU basket coming from Webster.

Stephanie Sherwood's 3-pointer for Maryville gave the Saints a 55-51 lead with 1:35 to play as the Hawks missed their last three shots and committed three turnovers after that point.

Edom led the Hawks with nine points, while Schumacher added eight. Rabas scored seven points and senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook/Seton Hill) scored six points to go with a team-high eight rebounds.

Sherwood led the Saints with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocks.

Quincy held Maryville to just 38 percent (19-for-50) shooting, but the Hawks managed only a 32 percent (18-for-57) from the field. QU owned a 41-31 edge on the glass, but the Saints scored 22 points off 21 Quincy turnovers.

The Hawks will begin a four-game homestand on Thursday (Jan. 26) at 5:15 p.m. when they welcome Missouri S&T to Pepsi Arena for a GLVC clash.
