Hawks Sweep USI To Win Fourth Straight

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match on Saturday (Sept. 24) afternoon at Pepsi Arena, sweeping Southern Indiana, 25-23, 25-23, 25-16.

It is Quincy's first four-match winning streak since it won four in a row Oct. 17-25, 2014.

The Hawks (8-5, 3-1 GLVC) opened up a six-match homestand with a win over Lindenwood on Tuesday and have followed that up with quality wins over GLVC East programs Bellarmine and USI. Saturday's win was just Quincy's third against the Screaming Eagles (6-7, 1-3 GLVC) since 2007.

Quincy trailed Set 1 by as many as four points, 18-14, but rallied to tie the set at 20-20 with back-to-back kills by sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark). Kills by McMonagle and junior Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) gave QU a 23-22 lead.

Following a USI timeout, Raebel put down another kill for set point. Two plays later, junior Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) registered the set-winning kill.

"I think the thing we've been most impressed with is our composure," said fourth-year head coach Bob Crank. "We've been down, we've been in tight sets and we've battled and found ways to get points we haven't gotten in years past. Our composure and tenacity to continue to fight has been great the last week."

The Hawks never trailed in Set 2, leading by as much as 17-9, before a run by the visitors cut the advantage down to 18-16. A kill by junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) then spurred a 3-0 QU run to push the lead to 21-16. USI battled back as an ace by Shannon Farrell made it 24-23, but Raebel's kill gave Quincy a 2-0 set lead.

In the third, the Hawks hit .250 while limiting the Screaming Eagles to a .071 mark on their way to a 25-16 win. Raebel had four kills in the set.

"Our offense has picked up a lot," Crank said. "Our serving has allowed our defense to be great and our passing has allowed our offense to be really good."

Raebel (.269) and McMonagle (.159) led the Hawks with 11 kills apiece. Senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) tacked on nine kills (.263) while Licurgo added eight kills (.238) and four aces.

Freshman setter Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) entered the game in the first set and impressed with 29 assists, three kills and eight digs. Junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 25 digs.

"We have to keep applying pressure from the serving line and keep getting quality touches at the net," said Crank. "One thing we need to tweak a little is being a little bit more disciplined with our attack and letting our offensive system work."

The Hawks will look to continue their winning ways on Friday (Sept. 30) at 7 p.m. at Pepsi Arena against William Jewell.
