Hawks Win Fifth Straight, Dispatch Jewell In Sweep

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team stormed out of the gates in the first two sets, then came back to win Set 3 as the Hawks cruised to a 25-16, 25-13, 25-22 win over William Jewell on Friday (Sept. 30) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (9-5, 4-1 GLVC) have now won five straight matches for the first time since they opened the 2012 season with a 5-0 record. The win also snapped the Cardinals' (9-6, 3-2 GLVC) five-match winning streak.

Quincy opened the first set on a 10-2 run, capped by four straight service points scored by senior Nicole Allaria (Edwardsville, Ill.). The Cardinals trimmed the lead to as little as three points, but juniors Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, Ariz./Sandra Day O'Connor) and Bekah Raebel (Waterford, Wis./Waterford Union) traded four kills to close the set at 25-16.

The Hawks also dominated Set 2, scoring the first six points of the frame with junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) on the serve. The first five points of that run all came on kills, including two by Raebel, and one each by senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian), junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) and sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark).

A service run by junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) pushed the lead out to 14-2 and the Hawks went on to clinch the set, 25-13, on consecutive kills by senior Jessica Wicinski (Geneva, Ill.) and Eastman.

The Hawks fell behind 4-0 in Set 3, but rallied back and eventually tied it at 8-8 on McMonagle's kill. The Cardinals then scored the next three points before the Hawks answered with their own three on Rodriguez's serve. Quincy took the lead for good on back-to-back kills by Raebel that gave the Hawks a 19-17 advantage. William Jewell staved off one set point before Eastman put down the match-winner at 25-22.

McMonagle produced a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while Raebel matched her with 11 kills (.269). Eastman had eight kills (.333) and Lindemulder (.222) and Licurgo (.353) had seven apiece.

Rodriguez compiled a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs and Wicinski added 16 digs. Shores had a match-high 25 digs to lead the back row – her second straight three-set match with 25 digs.

The Hawks will now face last year's Midwest Region Elite Eight representative Rockhurst at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (Hawktober 1) at 3 p.m.
