Hawks Split Regular Season Finale at WJC

LIBERTY, Mo. - The No. 10 Quincy University baseball won the last game of the regular season, 8-1, against William Jewell College, but fell in the first game of the doubleheader, 11-9, to drop the road Great Lakes Valley Conference series 3-1. QU will have to wait until tomorrow to find out where they land in the GLVC Championship Tournament seeding. Both Rockhurst University and Missouri S&T can pass the Hawks in the GLVC West standings depending on the outcomes of their respective series.

The Hawks (35-14, 18-10 GLVC) got the outing they were looking for from Mark Niebrugge (W, 4-2) in game two on Saturday. Niebrugge tossed eight innings scattering five hits with two walks. Niebrugge allowed one earned run and struck out four Cardinals (30-20, 15-13 GLVC).

Justin Blechle provided plenty of offense in game two. Blechle singled in the first inning to give QU a 2-0 lead. The senior hammered a solo home run in the fourth inning and followed with a two run homer to right center field in his next at bat for his 10th and 11th home runs of the season. Blechle finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.

After an out, Troy Wehde launched a solo home run in the seventh inning to give QU an 8-1 lead. Wehde also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

Ryan Snyder hit two doubles in game two with one RBI.

Snyder hit a two run home run in the seventh inning of game one that pulled the Hawks within 11-9. It was the senior's 19th home run of the season.

Snyder's home run capped a seven run comeback attempt that the Hawks put together in the sixth and seventh inning of game one. Blechle doubled in the sixth inning to bring home two runs. David Hayes hit a sacrifice fly to score one. Chris Ward followed with the first home run of his QU career. Ward's homer was of the two run variety.

The QU comeback was not enough to overcome a seven run fourth inning that William Jewell compiled. The Cardinals had three two-run doubles in the fourth inning.

WJC scored all 11 of their runs in the first four innings of game one.

Braden Shull (L, 5-2) took the loss for the Hawks. Shull allowed four earned runs in three innings pitched on three hits, three walks, two hit batters, and two wild pitches. The Hawks walked six Cardinals in game one.

Quincy will travel to Grand Park in Indianapolis, Ind. to take part in the GLVC Championship Tournament starting Thursday, May 12. QU will have the wait another day to find out where they will be seeded in the postseason tournament.
