Knights' Late Inning Heroics Upend Hawks in First Round of GLVC

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The No. 18 Quincy University baseball team held a 4-2 lead entering the ninth inning against Bellarmine University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 12. An error gave BU new life and the Knights scored four unearned runs in the inning to upset QU in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.

The Hawks (35-15) had a solid outing from southpaw starter, Jake Peterson. Peterson threw seven innings allowing two runs on eight hits. The senior had five strike outs and no walks.

Bellarmine (25-24) had an equally impressive outing from starter Hunter Spencer. Spencer seven and two third innings allowing four earned runs. Spencer did not factor into the decision.

Jake Walters put QU on top in the first inning with an RBI single to score Brynn Martinez.

The very next inning, Alex Ralph singled to score Drew Greenwood and tie the game for the Knights.

Justin Blechle singled in the fourth inning after the Knights intentionally walked Ryan Snyder to score David Jacob and give QU the lead.

Chris Ward led off the fifth inning with a bomb to left field to push the QU lead to 3-1.

Brynn Martinez led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to left field to give QU a 4-2 lead.

Teddy Rule (L, 3-1) came on for the Hawks to close it out in the top of the ninth. After two strike outs looking, Gavin Neuer reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. Cole Metcalfe cleared the bases with a double to left center to give Bellarmine the lead 5-4. Nick Wright singled to bring home Cole Metcalfe on a hustle play from second base. Drew Greenwood singled to right field and Ryan Snyder threw out Wright at the plate to end the top of the ninth with four unearned runs.

The Hawks had two singles in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to score. 

QU will play the loser of William Jewell College and the University of Southern Indiana tomorrow, May 13, at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. CDT. The William Jewell and Southern Indiana game starts tonight at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
