USI's Seven Run Sixth Tops Hawks in Midwest Regional

QUINCY, Ill. - The top seeded Quincy University baseball team jumped out to an early lead, but the four seed, University of Southern Indiana, scored seven runs in the sixth inning to give USI a 9-5 win in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament. The game was a battle of two 1-0 teams in the postseason tournament. Colin Nowak tossed eight innings, throwing 144 pitches to earn the win for USI. 

Jake Walters gave the Hawks (38-17) a two run lead with a two out home run on a lined shot to right field that skipped off the top of the wall.

USI (35-19) chipped away with a pair of solo home runs in the second and fourth inning to tie the game at two a piece. Ryan Bertram homered to right in the second inning and Drake McNamara left the yard to left field in the fourth.

The Hawks struck again with two outs when Brynn Martinez doubled down the right field line to score Troy Wehde and move Chris Ward to third. Dominic Miles singled to right field to score Martinez and Ward and give QU a 5-2 lead in the top of the sixth.

The Screaming Eagles led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back solo home runs from Kyle Niemeier and Kyle Kempf. USI went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-5 lead.

The Hawks put two runners on in the top of the ninth inning when T.J. Decker came on for the Screaming Eagles. The USI closer converted his eighth save of the season with two strike outs.

Brandon Ley (L, 7-2) took the loss for the Hawks allowing six earned runs over five and a third innings pitched. Ley allowed six hits, but four of those hits were home runs.

USI advances to play the winner of Grand Valley State and Ashland at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The Hawks will play the University of Indianapolis in an elimination game at 11 a.m. at QU Stadium on Saturday.
