Quincy Sees High and Low in 9th Inning at GLVC Tournament Saturday

WESTFIELD, Ind. - The No. 18 Quincy University baseball team won their first game of Saturday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament with three runs in the ninth inning over Bellarmine University, 8-5, to advance to the semifinals. The semifinal match up against Rockhurst University immediately followed. With a two run lead, QU allowed a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to fall to RU 7-6 and end Quincy's GLVC Tournament a day early.

Graham Spraker (W, 6-3) and Mark Niebrugge gave the Hawks (37-16) a pair of solid starts on Saturday. Spraker and Niebrugge both pitched eight innings for QU allowing four earned runs a piece. Both starters had five strike outs and two walks. Spraker allowed 11 hits and Niebrugge allowed 10 hits.

The Hawks fell behind 1-0 against Bellarmine (25-26) in the first inning. The Knights walked Ryan Snyder in the second inning and Justin Blechle made them pay with a two run blast to left center.

Ryan Snyder hit his 20th home run of the season to straight away center to lead off the fourth inning. Troy Wehde tripled to right center to score Justin Blechle from second base. Brynn Martinez doubled to score Wehde to give QU a 5-1 lead.

The Knights scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.

The Hawks busted the tie in the ninth inning thanks to an error, a hit batter, and a fly out that put David Jacob at third base. Another error allowed Jacob to score to give QU the lead. Troy Wehde doubled off the left field fence to score two insurance runs giving QU an 8-5 lead.

Teddy Rule (S, 6) came on for his sixth save of the season striking out one in the win.

Quincy took a two run lead over Rockhurst (30-22) in the first inning to start game two of the day.

RU chipped away with a run in the third and a run in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2. Rockhurst then took the lead on a Seth Soto single in the fifth inning, 3-2.

Troy Wehde singled to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning. Jake Walters gave Quincy a 4-3 lead with an RBI single scoring Dominic Miles in the seventh.

Seth Soto tied the game up again with another single in the seventh inning for Rockhurst.

Chris Ward doubled off the left field fence to score Troy Wehde and Matt Hilmes giving QU a 6-4 lead after eight innings of play.

Rule (L, 3-2) came on again for QU for the save opportunity in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rule recorded a strike out, but put two runners on to face Seth Soto. Soto hit a walk off home run to left field to lift Rockhurst 7-6 over QU and eliminate Quincy from the GLVC Championship Tournament.

Henry Weiler (W, 8-4) pitched a complete game for Rockhurst. Weiler allowed six earned runs scattering 14 hits, four walks, and striking out two.

Quincy will await the NCAA Division II Selection Show on Sunday at 9 p.m. CDT to find out if the Road to Cary will come through Quincy, Ill.
