Jewell's Bats Too Much For Hawks on Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team fell behind early in both games at William Jewell on Saturday (April 9) and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Cardinals, 10-4 and 6-1, in Liberty, Mo.

The Hawks (12-20, 7-13 GLVC) surrendered nine runs in the first three innings of Game 1 against the Cardinals (19-19, 10-10 GLVC), who capped the outburst with a five-run, five-hit third inning.

Quincy broke through offensively in the fourth inning. Junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) led off with a single and was retired on a fielder's choice by senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin). Scrum moved up to second as freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) reached on an error.

Freshman Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) followed with an RBI double. The Hawks then added two more runs on a grounder by senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) that got through on an error by WJC's first baseman.

Quincy cut the deficit to 9-4 in the fifth as junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) and senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) reached on one-out singles. Ledbetter came around to score on Scrum's RBI single.

The Cardinals got that run back in the bottom of the fifth to provide the final margin.
