Quirk's Gem Helps Quincy To Split at Rockhurst

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team was on the winning end of a pitchers' duel in Game 1 against Rockhurst, topping the host 2-1, before falling in Game 2, 8-0, on Sunday (April 10) in Kansas City.

Sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) spun a three-hit complete game in the opener to stop a six-game losing streak for the Lady Hawks (13-21, 8-14 GLVC).

Quirk squared off with Shannon Greene and the duo put zeros on the board in each of the first five innings. Quirk retired the side once in those five innings. In the fifth, Rockhurst had a runner reach third with one out after a leadoff walk, sac bunt and a passed ball. Quirk escaped by inducing a pop-up and a groundout to keep the game scoreless.

The Lady Hawks finally broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) led off with a double and sophomore Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) pinch ran. Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on a wild pitch.

Junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) grounded into a 1-2 fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded. Senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) broke through with a two-run double down the left field line to give QU a 2-0 lead. Quincy had a chance to extend the lead, but Shannon Greene got a pop-out and fly out to end the threat.

Quirk pitched around a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth to keep it 2-0. In the seventh, the right-hander hit Danielle Cross with a pitch and two batters later Alex Hill tripled her home with two outs to cut Quincy's lead in half. With the tying run 60 feet from home, Quirk got Madison Wagner to groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Quirk (3-5) earned her third win of the season, allowing one run on three hits. She walked three and struck out three. Shannon Greene (7-12) took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in seven innings.

Ledbetter was the only player to reach base twice for the Hawks. She walked and was hit by a pitch and scored a run.

In Game 2, Quincy's offense stalled as the Hawks managed just two hits against Bridgette Sappington.

Rockhurst scored five runs in the third inning off QU starter Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.), including a three-run home run by Cross. The hosts ended the game with three runs in the sixth inning.

Bradley (2-6) suffered the loss, while Sappington (9-12) tossed a complete game shutout. She struck out five.

Lindsey Greene and Scrum had the only hits for QU in the nightcap.

The Hawks return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex next Saturday (April 16) at noon when they take on Bellarmine.
