QU Bats Quieted By Bellarmine on Saturday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to Bellarmine on Saturday (April 16) afternoon by scores of 8-0 and 2-0 at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.

The Hawks (13-23, 8-16 GLVC) had trouble getting their bats going against the combination of Ally Foster and Madeline Kurtz, who each picked up a win on Saturday.

Foster opened the scoring in Game 1 with a two-run homer off QU junior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.), who worked 1/3 of an inning in her start. It was Foster's 14th home run of the season. She ranks second in the GLVC in that category.

Sophomore Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) came on in relief and did a solid job in the circle. She kept the Knights (27-21, 16-8 GLVC) off the board until the fifth when Rachel Fox knocked a two-run home run.

The Knights tacked on three runs in the sixth and another single run in the seventh – all off reliever Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.).

Quincy managed just two hits off Foster – a single by freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) in the fourth and a single by junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) in the sixth. Kurtz worked a scoreless seventh inning for Bellarmine.

In Game 2, freshman left-hander Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) tossed a complete game and allowed two runs – both solo homers – on eight hits. She struck out six and walked two, but was saddled with the loss (2-7).

Foster hit a solo homer in the first and Amy Feie ripped a solo shot in the third to provide the only runs for Bellarmine.

The Hawks threatened to tie or take the lead in the sixth as sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) singled and went to second on an error. Sophomore Emily Hillier (Naperville, Ill.) pinch ran and went to third on a wild pitch.

Freshman Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) was then hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Foster relieved Kurtz at that point and gave up a pop-up single to senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) to load the bases with no outs. Farbak then lifted a shallow fly ball to left, which Fox caught and threw home to retire Hillier trying to score for a double play. A groundout ended the threat.

McLaughlin, Ledbetter and junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) had Quincy's three hits – all singles – in the game.

Kurtz (7-8) earned the win, allowing just two hits and striking out one in five-plus innings. Foster picked up the two-inning save, her second of the year.

The Hawks will return to the Mart Heinen Softball Complex on Sunday (April 17) at noon to take on Southern Indiana. QU will recognize its three seniors prior to first pitch. Those three seniors are Ledbetter, Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) and Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic).
