Lady Hawks Celebrate Senior Day, Fall To USI

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday (April 17) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex, but the Lady Hawks were not able to pick up a win against visiting Southern Indiana, falling 10-2 and 9-1.

Prior to the twinbill, the Lady Hawks recognized the three seniors on the squad: Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central), Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic) and Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin). Quincy (13-25, 8-18 GLVC) still has one more home doubleheader on the schedule; that comes Wednesday (April 20) at 2 p.m. against Lincoln.

The Screaming Eagles (32-14, 20-6 GLVC) got on the board first in Game 1 as Lexi Reese slugged a two-out solo home run to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Ledbetter led off the bottom of the first with her sixth home run of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) then drew a walk and junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) reached on an error.

A wild pitch pushed both runners into scoring position. Another wild pitch by Haylee Smith brought home Farbak to give QU a 2-1 lead, but the Hawks could not muster another run and continue to apply pressure.

The Screaming Eagles tacked on two runs on a Janna Green home run to re-gain the lead before Haley Hodges led off the fourth with a solo blast to make it 4-2. Marleah Fossett's two run homer made it 6-2 in the sixth and Hodges hit a grand slam in the seventh to close the scoring.

Sophomore starter Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) suffered the loss (0-2), allowing four runs on four hits in three-plus innings. Junior Tiffany Harbison (Waterloo, Ill.) threw four innings of relief. Both pitchers struck out five batters.

Smith (11-6) earned the win for USI, allowing two runs (one earned) in seven innings. She struck out five and walked three.

Ledbetter led Quincy's offense by going 2-for-4 with a homer. Green had three hits for the Eagles, while Hodges had two homers and five RBI.

Freshman southpaw Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) started Game 2 for the Lady Hawks and held the Eagles in check for the first two innings. Hodges' RBI double gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the third.

The Lady Hawks loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the third as sophomore Geri Westerhoff (Minooka, Ill.) led off with a double and Powers and Ledbetter followed with consecutive walks. Farbak then delivered a sac fly to tie the game, but the Screaming Eagles picked Powers off second on the next batter and Greene grounded out to end the inning.

USI tacked on two runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead and Hodges led off the fifth with her third home run of the day and GLVC-leading 19th of the season. The Screaming Eagles scored five in the seventh to cap the scoring.

The Lady Hawks mustered just two hits off starter Sarah Owens (13-4), who allowed one run in six innings. She walked two and struck out two. Bradley (2-8) allowed nine runs on 11 hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Ledbetter reached base twice, going 1-for-2 with a walk. Westerhoff went 1-for-2 and scored a run.

The Lady Hawks finish their home season on Wednesday (April 20) at 2 p.m. when they take on Lincoln in a nonconference doubleheader.
