Lady Hawks Bounce Back With Sweep of Lincoln

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team turned in a doubleheader sweep on Wednesday (April 20) afternoon at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex, defeating Lincoln, 6-0 and 5-4, in nonconference action.

The Lady Hawks (15-25) got timely hitting and solid pitching performances to snap a five-game losing skid and end the Hawks' home schedule.

Sophomore Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) tossed a complete-game, three-hit shutout in the opener to get Quincy on the winning track. She struck out seven and walked two, needing only 69 pitches to get through seven innings. Quirk improved her record to 4-5.

Quirk was also the star of the lineup, smacking two solo home runs to give her three homers on the season.

QU got on the board in the first inning of Game 1, loading the bases with two outs before a wild pitch scored senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central), who singled to lead off the inning.

Quirk's one-out solo blast gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the second inning. In the fifth, Ledbetter led off with a home run to make it 3-0. Freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) and junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) followed with singles. With runners on the corners, sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) lifted a sac fly to right field that gave Quincy a four-run lead.

In the sixth, Quirk tacked on her second home run of the game with one out. Freshman Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) followed with a single, went to second on a groundout and scored on Farbak's single through the hole on the left side.

Meanwhile, Quirk cruised in the circle. She pitched around a two-out double in the first, a leadoff single in the second and a leadoff double in the seventh.

Greene went 3-for-3 with a double and a walk to lead the QU lineup. Ledbetter was 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored. Walsh went 2-for-3. The Hawks pounded 12 hits in the game.

In Game 2, the Lady Hawks opened the scoring in the third inning when Ledbetter crushed a 2-2 pitch over the wall for a three-run home run. She is now tied for the team lead with eight RBI.

Three singles in the fourth, the last an RBI hit by Ledbetter gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead.

Quincy starter Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) kept the Blue Tigers (5-46) off the board in the first four innings before they touched her up for single runs in the fifth and sixth to cut QU's lead in half, 4-2.

The Lady Hawks added an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, getting help from two Lincoln errors for an unearned tally.

Bradley turned the game over to sophomore Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg), who allowed a two-run home run to Spencer Silva, but hung on to earn her first career save. Bradley (3-8) earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits in six innings. She walked five and struck out four.

Ledbetter was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Sophomore Geri Westerhoff (Minooka, Ill.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Lady Hawks wrap up their season this weekend, beginning Saturday (April 23) at noon at Saint Joseph's.
