Lady Hawks, Pumas Split On Season's Penultimate Day

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team bounced back from a 4-1 defeat in its twinbill opener at Saint Joseph's on Saturday (April 23) afternoon with a 7-0 shutout of the Pumas in the nightcap.

Freshman southpaw Kasey Bradley (Waterloo, Ill.) scattered three singles in her second complete game shutout of the season. She allowed one walk and struck out two.

Meanwhile, the Lady Hawks (16-26, 9-19 GLVC) handed Bradley a two-run lead in the second inning. Freshman Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry) singled home sophomore Karli McLaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) with two outs to open the scoring. Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) followed with an RBI single that scored junior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC).

Bradley (4-8) allowed singles in the third, fourth and seventh innings, but was otherwise brilliant in recording her second straight win. She wound up facing just four batters over the minimum.

Quincy put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Ledbetter recorded an RBI single to keep the bases loaded. Freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) followed with an RBI single and junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.) tacked on a two-run single to make it 6-0. An RBI hit by sophomore Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) capped the scoring.

Ledbetter was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Greene was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a stolen base. Jones was 2-for-3 with two runs. Walsh went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

Sara Demuth (2-8) took the loss for the Pumas (13-36, 9-19 GLVC), allowing two runs on three hits in two innings.

Saint Joseph's took a 2-0 first-inning lead in Game 1 and never trailed as Morgan Akre kept the QU offense in check, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings.

Quincy scored its lone run in the third inning. Walsh reached on an error and went to second on Ledbetter's single. After a fly out, Greene singled to load the bases and senior Rachel Scrum (Maryville, Ill./Collinsville/UT-Martin) plated Walsh on a groundout.

The Pumas scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings off QU starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) to complete the scoring.

Quirk (4-6) was charged with the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. She walked one and did not have a strikeout. Akre (4-13) did not walk or strike out a batter in her complete game.

Greene went 3-for-3 in the game as the Hawks out-hit the Pumas, 7-6. Quirk was 2-for-3 in the batter's box.

The Lady Hawks wrap up their season on Sunday (April 24) at No. 2 Indianapolis. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. CT .
