Lady Hawks Sweep Doubles, Drop Close Match to UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's and men's tennis teams each fell to visiting Missouri-St. Louis in GLVC action on Friday (April 8) afternoon at Reservoir Park.

The QU women swept the three doubles matches, but were defeated in five of the six singles matches as the Tritons came back to win, 5-4. On the men's side, the Hawks were only able to take one singles match with UMSL pulling away for an 8-1 win.

In women's doubles play, the top team of junior Elizabeth Kuenzi (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) and sophomore Rebecca McIsaac (Fairview Heights, Ill./Belleville East) topped the team of Jennifer Hauer and Patricia Maya, 9-7.

Junior Amy Kuhle (Decatur, Ill./St. Teresa) and sophomore Sydney Lynch (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) knocked off Renee Verboven and Natalia Carvalhais, 8-5. In another close match at third doubles, senior Anna Morrissey (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) and junior Morgan McGinnis (Edwardsville, Ill.) toppled Annie Hays and Chandler Duchaine, 8-6.

The Lady Hawks (10-6, 1-2 GLVC) played several tight matches in singles play, but could not get the two wins it needed to secure the victory.

Kuhle was successful at first singles, picking up a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Hauer. Kuenzi fell to Salome Bleuler in straight sets, despite going to a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

At fourth singles, Morrissey rallied in a second-set tiebreaker to even her match with Verboven, but the latter came away with the 6-2, 6-7 (10-12), 6-3 win. Lynch also went to a first-set tiebreak at sixth singles, but could not pull out the win against Missouri-St. Louis (13-4, 2-0 GLVC).

Things were much more straightforward on the men's side as the Hawks (5-9, 1-2 GLVC) were not able to gain traction against the Tritons (11-3, 1-0 GLVC), who opened conference play on Friday.

Senior Chris Bueler (Hannibal, Mo.) picked up the Hawks' lone win, defeating Irving Corrales in a third set, 6-0, 3-6, 10-7, at sixth singles.

UMSL was able to sweep the remaining matches in straight sets. The closest QU came in doubles play was at the No. 3 spot as Bueler and freshman Danyil Vayser (Round Lake, Ill./Gymnasium Konsul #86) fell to Corralles and Dario Vidaurre, 8-6.

The women's team returns to the court on Saturday (April 9) at 10 a.m. against Maryville in a second straight home GLVC match. The men will have the remainder of the weekend off and get back on the court next Friday (April 15) at Rockhurst.
