Hawks Secure MIVA Tourney Spot Despite Defeat

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team was defeated in straight sets on Friday (April 8) night at McKendree, 25-23, 25-20, 25-20, in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action.

Despite the loss, the Hawks (18-21, 4-11 MIVA) clinched their spot in the MIVA Tournament. Quincy holds a one-match lead over IPFW and Lindenwood in the standings with one match to go. The Hawks own the tiebreaker over both schools and will be the No. 7 seed in the MIVA Tournament.

On Friday, the Hawks (18-21, 4-11 MIVA) led the Bearcats (10-13, 5-11 MIVA) in kills, 34-28, but the visitors were hurt by 23 service errors and a 9-3 deficit in total blocks. The Bearcats out-hit the Hawks, .295 to .215.

Quincy dropped a topsy-turvy first set that saw 17 tie scores and nine lead changes. The Hawks led by as many as three points, 13-10 after a double block by senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) and freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney). A kill by senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) pushed Quincy's lead back to three, but the Bearcats reeled off the next four points to take a 15-14 advantage.

Gamache's kill gave the Hawks a 22-21 lead later in the set and a service error made it 23-22 for Quincy, but the Bearcats rattled off three straight points to steal the set. The Hawks out-hit the Bearcats, .312 to .150 in the frame and got four kills each from Gamache and senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West).

The tide turned in Set 2 as the Bearcats hit .450 and committed just one hitting error while holding the Hawks to a .115 mark and seven errors.

The Hawks could not get a run going in Set 3 as the Bearcats got a sideout on 80 percent of QU's serves.

Lawson led all players with 12 kills (.304). Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) added nine kills (.538) and it was the first time this season he was held without a block.

Junior setter Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out a match-high 31 assists. Freshman Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) led the Hawks with five digs.
