#2 Buckeyes Defeat Hawks in Regular Season Finale

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team ended the regular season on Sunday (April 10) night, falling to No. 2 Ohio State in straight sets, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21, in Columbus.

The Hawks (18-22, 4-12 MIVA) and Buckeyes (25-3, 15-1 MIVA) had already sealed their Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament fates earlier in the weekend.

Ohio State won the MIVA regular season championship and secured the No. 1 seed, while Quincy locked in the No. 7 seed. QU will play No. 2-seed and two-time defending national champion Loyola-Chicago in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinal for the fourth straight year.

On Sunday, the Hawks played the Buckeyes tight for most of the match as OSU out-hit QU, .303 to .286. The Buckeyes led in kills, 37-30, and aces, 9-5. The Hawks, though, committed just 10 hitting errors and out-blocked the hosts, 9.5-5.

The Hawks led early in Set 1 after four straight serving points by senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) gave QU a 4-2 edge. The Buckeyes quickly responded, using an 8-3 run to take a 10-7 lead they would not give up.

The teams traded blows in Set 2, which saw 14 tie scores and seven lead changes. Ohio State led, 12-9, before the Hawks ran off five of the next six points, including two aces by junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) to hand the Hawks a 14-13 lead.

The Bucks fought back and took a 22-18 lead before senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) pulled the Hawks into a 22-22 deadlock with a hot service run that saw him put down an ace and one kill each from Kelso and senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West).

QU then had set point at 24-23 after kills by Lawson and Chappelle, but OSU scored three straight to take a commanding two-set lead. Lawson had six kills on seven attacks in Set 2.

The Hawks never led in Set 3 as the Buckeyes pulled away for the 25-21 win.

Lawson led the Hawks with 11 kills (.409), while adding five digs. Gamache put down seven kills (.267) with two aces, a team-high six digs and two blocks. Kelso had four kills (.000) and five blocks. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 27 assists as he and Kelso played just minutes from their hometowns in Central Ohio.

Miles Johnson led the Buckeyes with 12 kills (.381) and seven digs.

The Hawks will play three-time defending MIVA champion Loyola-Chicago in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinal, which is tentatively set for Friday (April 15) at Gentile Arena.
