Hawks Drop Tight Match To #10 Loyola in MIVA Tournament

QUINCY, Ill. – For the third time this season, the Quincy University men's volleyball team claimed at least a set off the two-time defending national champions, No. 10 Loyola-Chicago, but the Ramblers pulled out a 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22 win in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals on Friday (April 15) night at Gentile Arena in Chicago.

The No. 7-seeded Hawks (18-23) saw their season come to a close with the defeat, while the No.-2 seeded Ramblers (20-7) advanced to the MIVA semifinals.

The Hawks and Ramblers were tight in the early portions of Set 1 on Friday night, but an 8-2 run by the hosts broke an 8-8 tie and gave LUC a 16-10 lead. Loyola hit .708 in the opening frame with 18 kills against just one hitting error.

In Set 2, the Hawks keyed in defensively and held the Ramblers to a .138 hitting percentage and posting 3.5 blocks. Quincy actually trailed 17-14 before a 4-0 run with senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) serving gave QU an 18-17 lead. A solo block by junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) capped that run.

Loyola responded and took a 19-18 lead, but the Hawks got two straight points to regain the lead. The match was tied at 21-21 before Quincy rattled off four straight points, the last three with senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) on the serve. Lawson's ace followed kills by freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) to give QU the set win. Lawson had nine kills through the first two sets.

The Hawks never led in Set 3 after the Ramblers scored the first three points of the frame. Quincy used a Fanfulik 4-0 service run to cut the deficit to 12-11, but Loyola came back with its own 4-0 run to take command.

In Set 4, the Hawks put up a tremendous effort to come back from a 14-7 deficit to take a 16-15 lead as Gamache keyed a 6-0 service run, which he capped with a service ace. After an LUC timeout, the host scored three straight points to re-gain an 18-16 advantage. A service error and a Fanfulik kill tied it back up at 18-18, but the Ramblers scored the next two and the Hawks were not able to tie it up again.

Lawson led the Hawks with 13 kills (.273). He recorded at least 10 kills in five of his last six matches played. Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) tacked on 11 kills (.562). Gamache had six kills and a team-high eight digs. Fanfulik had 34 assists, six kills (.231) and three blocks. Senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) added five kills (.231).

The Ramblers led the Hawks in kills, 54-49, and out-hit QU, .349 to .211. Loyola also maintained a 13 to 5.5 edge in blocks. The Hawks finished with a 5-2 lead in aces.
