Ley Pitches Quincy to Split with Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 10 Quincy University baseball team finished Saturday with an impressive 6-1 win. QU fell short of a big comeback in game one against Maryville University. Ryan Snyder hit his 15th and 16th homerun of the season tying the QU record for most homeruns in a season.

Brandon Ley (W, 5-0) tossed a complete game allowing one run in game two. Ley allowed four hits in seven innings with three strikeouts.

Ryan Snyder homered in the fourth and fifth inning of game one in back-to-back at bats to tie the QU Record set by Kevin Sewell in 2004.

The Hawks (28-10, 12-6 GLVC) fell behind in both games as MU (18-20, 9-9 GLVC) scored in the first inning of game one with a two-RBI single from Dalton Schumer.

QU scored one run in each of the first three innings. Dominic Miles hit his sixth homerun of the season in the third inning to give the Hawks their third run.

The Saints had a big three run inning in the second inning. The scoring streak started with a homerun by Louis Niemerg. Maryville led 9-3 after the top of the fourth inning.

Ryan Snyder smashed a solo homerun to left field in the fourth inning to spark a rally. Brynn Martinez tripled down the right field line to bring home Matt Hilmes and Chris Ward to pull the Hawks within three runs.

David Jacob homered for the ninth time this season to lead off the fifth inning. After a Maryville pitching change, Ryan Snyder sent a long fly ball over Sycamore Street and deep into the gravel parking lot in left field for his second homerun of the game.

Justin Blechle hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to score Ryan Snyder and tie the game at nine.

Niemerg doubled down the left field line to score two runs for the Saints in the eighth inning to retake the lead.

Jake Walters doubled down the right field line to score Jake Walters in the bottom of the ninth inning, but was stranded in scoring position for the Hawks to fall 11-10 in game one.

Ley was just what the Hawks needed in game two. The senior was tremendous on the mound by getting ahead in counts and pitching to contact.

The Saints took the lead on their lone score as a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mitch Carriger to score Niemerg in the third inning.

The Hawks answered in the bottom of the third inning as Brynn Martinez tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Troy Wehde. David Jacob doubled down the left field line to bring home Chris Ward and give QU the lead. Jake Walters singled to right center to score Jacob.

In the sixth inning, Ryan Snyder singled to score Jacob. Justin Blechle crushed an opposite field two-run homerun to left field to add some insurance to Ley's effort.

The Hawks finished the day with a 6-1 win.

Quincy and Maryville will play a final doubleheader on Sunday, April 23 with first pitch coming at noon.
