Quincy Splits With Lewis in Midweek Hit Parade

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 10 Quincy University baseball team split a non-conference midweek doubleheader with Lewis University on Wednesday, Apr. 20 at QU Stadium. QU was dominant in game one earning a 14-1 win. Lewis flipped the script in game two with a 16-5 win. The losing team in each game entered their final inning without a run.

Braden Shull (W, 5-1) was masterful on the mound for the Hawks (27-9) in game one. Shull tossed six innings of two-hit, shutout baseball allowing two walks. The lefty struck out five in his fifth win of the season.

Robert Talarico (L, 0-3) got into trouble early for the Flyers (20-15). Talarico finished with three walks and three hit batters in two and a third innings. The Hawks tagged Talarico for eight runs.

Brynn Martinez singled through the left side in the second inning to score Justin Blechle for the first run of the game.

Dominic Miles followed with a double to left center to score David Hayes and Martinez. Miles finished the first game 4-for-4 with a double and five RBI.

The Hawks built a strong lead with a seven-run third inning to give Shull a 10 run cushion. QU hit four doubles and two singles in the bottom of the third. David Hayes, Chris Ward, Justin Blechle, and Jake Walters all hit doubles.

Blechle hit a solo homer to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. Blechle was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI in game one.

QU added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take a 14-0 lead.

Zach Parker had a pinch hit home run in the seventh inning to put the Flyers on the board before the final out.

Cole Crawford (L, 1-2) got into trouble early in the game two start for the Hawks. Crawford allowed three runs in the first and one run in the second inning off six hits and a walk.

The Flyers piled on 16 total runs in game two including three home runs.

The Hawks went into the final inning trailing 16-0. With two outs in the final frame, David Jacob singled to left center to score Martinez and Troy Wehde. Jake Walters followed with a single to score Jacob. Ryan Snyder teed off in the next at-bat and crushed a two-run shot to left field into the third row of cars in the parking lot. It was Snyder's 14th homerun of the season.

The rally fell short at 16-5 to end with a split doubleheader.

Lewis finished game two with 19 hits. The Hawks had 15 hits in game one.

Quincy will play host to Maryville University this weekend in a Great Lakes Valley Conference series starting Saturday, Apr. 23 with a doubleheader. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
