Lawson Records 1,000th Kill In Thrilling Five-Set Win

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball knocked off IPFW in five sets, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12, on Saturday (April 3) night in front of a noisy Alumni Night and Senior Night crowd at Pepsi Arena to earn a crucial MIVA victory.

With the win, the Hawks (18-20, 4-10 MIVA) are now two matches ahead of Lindenwood (2-12 MIVA) with two matches to play in the chase to make the MIVA Tournament. The top eight teams in the MIVA standings advance to the postseason. Quincy is also now one match ahead of IPFW (3-11 MIVA) and owns the tiebreaker against the Mastodons.

In the third set, senior outside hitter Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) also recorded his 1,000th career kill. He is the seventh player in program history to reach that mark. Lawson led the Hawks with 16 kills (.243) on the night.

After dropping the first set, the Hawks rebounded in Set 2, going on a 3-0 run with senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) serving to take a 20-17 lead. Back-to-back errors by the Mastodons (10-16, 3-11 MIVA) gave the Hawks the win.

The Hawks led a majority of Set 3, but the Mastodons held a 22-21 lead late after Andrew Sellan's ace. Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) followed with a kill then partnered with Lawson on a block to regain the lead at 23-22. IPFW got a kill before a service error gave Quincy set point. A kill by senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) handed the win to QU.

The 'Dons picked up a win in Set 4, 25-23, in another tightly contested frame.

After an error to start the decisive fifth set, the Hawks went on a 7-3 run, capped by a double block by sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) and Gamache.

The Mastodons were able to tie the set at 10-10 before the Hawks rattled off three straight points, including kills by Kelso and Lawson, to give the hosts a 13-10 lead. The teams then traded sideouts before Lawson finished the match with his fourth kill of the fifth set.

Kelso was outstanding from his middle position, finishing with 14 kills (.429) and six blocks (three solo). Gamache added a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs. Senior Craig Lantz (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson/Adrian College) added 10 digs as the Hawks' primary libero. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 51 assists and helped Quincy hit .281 as a team.

The teams were even with 55 kills apiece and the 'Dons finished with a 61-58 advantage in points scored, including 11 service aces. IPFW was doomed by 27 service errors. The Hawks also won at the net, leading in blocks 11-5.

The Hawks wrap up MIVA play with two matches next week, beginning Friday (April 8) night at McKendree. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
