Hawks Take Flight on Windy Day to Split with S&T

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 8 Quincy University baseball team earned a split on Saturday with the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division leader heading into this weekend. On a windy day when gusts reach upwards of 32 miles-per-hour blowing across the field from right to left, QU left the yard five times against Missouri S&T in a doubleheader. S&T won game one 11-7, before the Hawks took game two 17-9.

Ryan Snyder knocked out his eighth and ninth home runs of the season with one in each game. Matt Hilmes continued his hitting streak to nine games.

The Hawks' (17-6, 3-3 GLVC) offense was strong again, but the pitching was shaky. The QU pitching staff combined for 17 earned runs on 22 hits, nine walks, six hit batters, and 10 wild pitches.

The wind played tricks on both defenses all day as both teams finished with five errors a piece.

The Miners (17-8, 4-2 GLVC) opened the scoring in game one on a fielder's choice RBI in the third inning by Eli Miller, and scored another run on an error in the fourth inning.

The Hawks answered with a three-run fifth inning including David Jacob's first career home run at QU Stadium.

Nick Ulrich hit a grand slam into the jet stream to right field to retake the lead for the Miners in the sixth and the Miners continued to answer any push the Hawks made at a comeback for the rest of game one.

Snyder left the yard to left field on a mammoth shot straight into the wind in the seventh inning, but the Hawks could not find much traction for a big inning.

In game two, the Hawks had their big innings early and often. The Hawks batted around in the first and second inning.

QU scored six runs in the first inning. Ryan Snyder hit a three-run homer to right field. The Hawks had six hits in the first inning.

Quincy scored another seven runs in the second inning with another six hits. This time, Matt Hilmes delivered the three-run homer to right field. Prior to Hilmes' homer, Jake Walters tripled to left center off the wall to score David Jacob from first.

Justin Blechle homered to right field in the fifth inning to add insurance to the Hawks' lead.

The Miners scored five runs in the first two innings and finished with three runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

The QU offense combined for 32 hits on the day. Ryan Snyder collected six hits, six RBI, and two home runs in the two games. Matt Hilmes had five hits and three RBI for the day. Justin Blechle was 6-for-7 with two RBI and a homer.

The Hawks and Miners square off for another GLVC doubleheader at QU Stadium tomorrow, April 3rd with first pitch starting at noon.
