Hawks Complete Sweep of Drury on Sunday

OZARK, Mo. - The No. 9 Quincy University baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of Drury University on Sunday Apr. 17 with a 9-2 win in game one and a 3-2 win in game two that when 11 innings. Dominic Miles delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 11th to finish the sweep of DU. QU took advantage of eight hits and eight walks in the night cap to down the Panthers.

The Hawks (26-8, 11-5 GLVC) jumped on the board early in game one. With runners on first and second, Jake Walters singled to right field to score Brynn Martinez. Miles scored on a passed ball, and singles from Justin Blechle and JP Meyer gave QU a 4-0 lead before Drury (13-24, 5-11 GLVC) stepped to the plate.

Drury scored two unearned runs against Graham Spraker (W, 5-1) in the fourth inning. Spraker tossed six innings allowing four hits and four walks in the win. The right-handed pitcher struck out six Panthers.

Jake Wehde pitched a scoreless seventh to finish a 9-2 win in game one.

The Hawks plated nine runs on nine hits, eight walks, and two hit batsmen in the first game.

Jake Peterson threw seven strong innings for the Hawks in game two. Peterson allowed one unearned run off three hits and one walk. The southpaw tossed seven strike outs.

The Hawks notched a run in the first inning of game two when Blechle walked with the bases loaded to score Miles. A Troy Wehde single in the fourth inning gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Teddy Rule (W, 1-0) entered the game in the ninth inning with a save opportunity in a 2-1 ballgame. Rule allowed a lead-off single to Ryan Kayhill before recording two consecutive outs. Kayhill stole second base to stand in scoring position. Spencer Wilmes doubled to right center to score Kayhill and tie the game. 

Nathan Schweppe singled to right field, but Ryan Snyder came up firing and gunned Wilmes down at the plate to force extra innings.

With two outs in the 11th inning, Chris Ward took advantage of a walk and a wild pitch to end up in scoring position at second base. Martinez walked to bring up the hot hitting Dominic Miles. Miles came through in the clutch with an opposite field single to left field to score Ward from second. 

Rule settled down on the mound to provide two scoreless innings for the Hawks and secure the 3-2 win.

Miles finished the day 6-for-7 with two runs and one RBI. The Quincy, Ill. native had a triple and a stolen base.

Blechle was 3-for-3 in game one with a run scored and two RBI.

The Hawks play host to Lewis University on Wednesday, Apr. 20 in a midweek non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
