No. 9 Hawks Earn Saturday Sweep of Drury

OZARK, Mo. - The ninth-ranked Quincy University baseball team secured a come-from-behind win in game one with a three-run ninth inning and followed with a 5-1 victory in game two to earn a Saturday sweep at Drury University. Brandon Ley gave QU the edge in game two allowing one unearned run through six innings for his fourth win.

Drury (13-22, 5-9 GLVC) struck first scoring four runs in the first two innings of play. 

The Hawks (24-8, 9-5 GLVC) loaded the bases in the fourth inning. Brynn Martinez scored on a wild pitch. After Ryan Snyder walked to load the bases again, Matt Hilmes singled to score Dominic Miles. Justin Blechle and JP Meyer both grounded out to score another two runs to tie the game at 4-4.

Jake Walters led off the sixth inning with a double to center field. Hilmes doubled to left field to score Walters. Hilmes scored on a passed ball later in the frame.

The Panthers tied the game again in the bottom half of the sixth on a ground out and an error following a stolen base.

Justin Blechle regained the lead for the Hawks with an RBI double to right field in the eighth inning.

Mason McCarville tied the game again for the Panthers in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double to left center.

David Hayes singled to start the ninth inning. Nolan Snyder pinch ran and took second on a passed ball. Brynn Martinez singled to score N. Snyder giving QU the 8-7 lead. Matt Hilmes gave the Hawks some insurance with a two-RBI single to score Miles and Martinez.

Teddy Rule (S, 3) pitched around a hit batter and a walk to record his third save of the season. Karl Hirsch (W, 2-0) claimed the win allowing an earned run in one inning. Mark Niebrugge threw seven innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strike outs.

Brandon Ley (W, 4-0) tossed a six inning gem in game two allowing one unearned run while scattering six hits. Ley struck out three and walked one.

Troy Wehde singled to left field to score Justin Blechle in the second inning to give QU the lead. Brynn Martinez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a second run in the second inning. 

In the fifth inning, Ryan Snyder smashed his 13th homerun of the season. It was a solo homer to left field.

The Panthers would score their lone run off an error in the sixth inning.

The Hawks gave themselves some cushion when Matt Hilmes doubled to left field to score R. Snyder in the seventh inning. JP Meyer hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hilmes and give the Hawks a 5-1 lead.

Hilmes was 4-for-4 in game one with four RBI. Hilmes added an RBI and a hit in game two as well. 

The Hawks finished with 22 hits on Saturday.

Quincy will play Drury in a doubleheader on Sunday for the series finale. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
