QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 9 Ball State in MIVA action on Friday (April 1) night at Pepsi Arena, 25-11, 25-17, 26-24.

The Hawks (17-20, 3-10 MIVA) nearly forced a fourth set after fighting off six straight match points, but the Cardinals (19-6, 11-2 MIVA) prevailed with two kills after the Hawks tied it at 24-24.

Ball State used a 9-0 run with Hiago Garchet serving to take a 15-5 lead in Set 1 on its way to a victory. The Cardinals hit .591 in the frame and did not have a hitting error.

The Hawks trailed Set 2 by just two, 18-16, before the Cardinals rallied for seven of the last eight points.

In Set 3, the Hawks trailed 24-18, but senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) got on a serving roll. A kill by senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) got the Hawks going. He then combined on a block with senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) to make it 24-20.

Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) followed with a kill before an error forced a BSU timeout with the Hawks still trailing, 24-22.

Another error by Ball State set up the Hawks to tie the match, which they did on another double block by Coutts and Gamache to force another Cardinals timeout.

Ball State was able stop the run there with kills by Mitch Weiler and Edgardo Cartagena that ended the match.

Chappelle, Gamache and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had eight kills apiece while Lawson added seven. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) dished out 31 assists. Freshman Kolbie Knorr (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) led the back row with eight digs.

The Hawks were beaten on the block, 9-3, and also committed eight more service errors, 14-6. Ball State out-hit Quincy, .387 to .167.

The Hawks return to the floor for their home finale and Senior Night on Saturday (April 2) when they take on IPFW (10-15, 3-10 MIVA). First serve is set for 7 p.m.
