Kelso Leads Hawks To 4-0 Record in Kentucky

BEREA, Ky. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team won a pair of matches on Tuesday (March 8) to conclude the AVCA Challenge at Seabury Center Arena in Berea, Ky.
 
The Hawks (13-16) went 4-0 on the weekend, getting wins over NAIA No. 3 Graceland (25-20, 28-30, 25-19, 25-20) and King (25-21, 25-20, 25-22) on Tuesday.
 
Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) hit .458 in the four matches averaging 11.5 kills and 5.75 blocks per match. As a team, the Hawks hit at least .300 in all four matches.
 
Quincy def. NAIA No. 3 Graceland – 25-20, 28-30, 25-19, 25-20
 
The Hawks used a dominating effort at the net to defeat the NAIA's No. 3-ranked team in four sets. Quincy piled up a season-high 14 blocks in the victory and held the Jackets (18-3) to a .168 hitting percentage.
 
Meanwhile, the Hawks were efficient offensively, hitting .360 in the match.
 
The Hawks raced out to an 8-4 lead in Set 1, getting back-to-back blocks before an attacking error by Graceland forced a timeout.
 
A service run by senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City), capped by kill from junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) gave QU a 16-9 lead. A setter dump by junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) handed the Hawks the win.
 
The second set saw eight tie scores and five lead changes. Quincy led through the early points, but Graceland rallied to take an 18-15 lead. Senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) went on a 5-0 service run to push Quincy ahead, 20-18.
 
Senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) added a couple kills  to stretch it to 23-19. QU got it to set point, but Graceland fought it off three times to extend the set.
 
GU went up on the next two points, but kills by Kelso and Fanfulik kept the Hawks in the game. A block by Chappelle and Coutts gave Quincy set point at 27-26 before two straight by the Jackets gave them a chance to win. After a service error, the Jackets scored on the next two points for the win.
 
The Hawks hit .550 and registered four blocks in Set 3 to get the win. Gamache got the Hawks going on a 5-0 service run to take a 5-1 lead. Gamache's run in the middle of the set pushed QU's lead to 17-10 and the Hawks went on for the 25-19 victory. A kill by freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) gave QU the win.
 
The Hawks opened up a 9-4 lead early Set 4 and never trailed. The Jackets cut it to 16-15, but Fanfulik's service run pushed QU ahead 21-16. Seibum's kill capped that burst. A kill by Kelso clinched the match for Quincy.
 
Kelso led the Hawks with 12 kills (.526) and eight blocks. Gamache added 11 kills (.417) to go with nine digs. Chappelle led the back row with 10 digs and chipped in nine kills (.333). Lawson put down eight kills (.294) and had eight digs in just two sets played.
 
Quincy def. King – 25-21, 25-20, 25-22
 
The first set between Quincy and King featured 12 tie scores and five lead changes. The game was tied at 19-19, but the Hawks reeled off six of the next eight points to pull out the win. Kelso's ace clinched the set.
 
The Hawks needed a comeback in Set 2 after trailing 5-0 at the start. Quincy still trailed 13-8 before sophomore Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) went on a 5-0 serving run to tie the game.
 
Later, the Hawks trailed, 19-17, Siebum scored seven in a row from the service line, including three aces, before putting down the set-clinching kill.
 
The Hawks led Set 3, 19-18, before scoring four of the next five points to take a 23-19 lead. Siebum sealed the sweep with a kill at 25-22.
 
Kelso led the Hawks with 12 kills (.500) and six digs while Chappelle added 11 kills (.450). Fanfulik dished out 39 assists and had a match-high eight digs.
 
The Hawks will now play in the Culver-Stockton Invitational beginning Friday (March 11) with matches against Robert Morris (5 p.m.) and Lindenwood-Belleville (7 p.m.)
