Hawks Defeat NAIA #9 Robert Morris in Split

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Culver-Stockton Invitational on Friday (March 11) night in Canton, Mo.
 
Quincy came away with a 25-22, 25-23, 27-25 win over NAIA No. 9 Robert Morris before slipping up against Lindenwood-Belleville, 25-22, 26-24, 25-23. The defeat to the Lynx snapped a five-game winning streak for the Hawks (14-17).

The Hawks pulled out Set 1 over the Eagles (24-6) after trailing, 15-13. Senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) went on a serving run to give QU a 17-15 lead after an ace. Quincy then scored five of six points to take a 22-18 lead – the last point coming on a double block by junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney). A ball handling error against Bobby Ying gave QU the win.
 
In Set 2, the Hawks trailed, 22-20, before going on a 5-1 run to close the frame. Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) finished the run and the set with a solo block.
 
Lawson got on another run behind the service line in Set 3, turning an 8-4 deficit into a 10-8 advantage as sophomore Anthony Winter (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/St. Edward) capped the run with a kill. The set remained close the rest of the way.
 
QU had match point at 24-23, but the Eagles score two straight to take the lead. The Hawks then scored three in a row, the last a kill by Chappelle to win the match.
 
Lawson led the Hawks with nine kills (.211) and two aces while Kelso added nine kills (.538) and two blocks. The Hawks hit .292 in the match while holding the Eagles to a .190 mark. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) had 32 assists and five kills (.571). Chappelle registered seven kills (.211) and seven digs.
 
Lindenwood-Belleville def. Quincy – 25-22, 26-24, 25-23
 
The Hawks were limited to a .122 hitting percentage as the Lynx totaled 10 blocks and out-dug Quincy, 34-24.
 
Lawson paced the Hawks with 11 kills (.138). Chappelle added six digs (.125) to go with three aces and three blocks. Fanfulik dished out 30 assists.
 
The Lynx hit .295 as a team, led by Taylor Tattersall, who had 19 kills (.412).
 
Quincy will return to the court on Saturday at noon to take on Park in Canton, Mo.
