Hawks Knock Off NAIA #6 Park in Four Sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team won for the sixth time in seven matches on Saturday (March 12), defeating NAIA No. 6 Park in four sets, 25-17, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16, at the Culver-Stockton Invitational in Canton, Mo.
 
The Hawks (15-17) hit .378 in the match, their second-highest output of the season, as three players finished with at least 10 kills.
 
Quincy went on a 4-0 with junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) behind the service line to take an 8-3 lead it would not give up. A kill by junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) secured the set win for QU.
 
The Pirates (15-8) hit .417 in Set 2, the only time in the match they hit at least .200, to tie the match at one game apiece.
 
QU used a 9-3 run in Set 3 to take a commanding 16-9 lead after a double block by Kelso and freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney). Two straight attacking errors by the Pirates gave Quincy the win.
 
The Hawks cruised in Set 4 by hitting .550 and holding the Pirates to a .048 mark. Quincy closed the set on a 13-5 run and a double block by Siebum and sophomore Jacob Sheets (Arnold, Mo./Seckman) ended the match.
 
Lawson led the Hawks with 15 kills (.267) and six digs. Kelso added 12 kills (.800) with no errors on 15 attacks to go with six blocks. Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) chipped in 10 kills (.368). Fanfulik handed out 43 assists and had seven digs. Siebum finished with nine kills (.471) and nine digs.
 
Oscar Tuero led the Pirates with 24 kills (.176). Quincy totaled 10 blocks as a team.
 
The Hawks return to the floor next Friday (March 18) at 7 p.m. for a MIVA match against No. 13 Lewis. in Romeoville, Ill.
