#14 Lewis Too Much For Visiting Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team returned to Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play for the first time in two weeks, but the Hawks fell to 14th-ranked and last year's national runner-up Lewis, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23, on Friday (March 18) night at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Ill.

The Hawks (15-18, 3-8 MIVA) have still won six of their last eight matches heading into tomorrow's matchup with defending national champion and 12th-ranked Loyola Chicago.

On Friday, the Hawks could not get anything going offensively, hitting .159 as a team. Quincy also had trouble handling the Flyers' serves, giving up six aces. Lewis (13-10, 7-5 MIVA) hit .256 overall.

The Hawks did not lead in either of the first two sets as they hit .148 and .057, respectively.

In Set 3, the Hawks opened up a 15-13 edge by going on a 7-2 run, helped by two 3-0 service runs by seniors Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central). The Hawks capped the run with back-to-back double blocks by juniors Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) and Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby), and then by Kelso and freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney).

Siebum's kill kept the lead at two, 16-14, but the Flyers battled back to take a 21-20 lead they would not relinquish, despite two straight kills by Gamache that cut QU's deficit to 24-23. Bobby Walsh's kill ended it for Lewis.

Senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) and Gamache paced the Hawks with seven kills each. Coutts hit .500 with just one error and the pair also combined for seven blocks. QU finished with nine blocks in the match.

Kelso added six kills (.214) while Lawson finished with five kills. Lawson and Fanfulik led the defense with five digs apiece. Fanfulik dished out 26 assists.

Matt Perinar led the Flyers with 18 kills (.448) and two aces. Scott Fifer had 29 assists.

The Hawks play No. 12 Loyola Chicago on Saturday (March 18) at 7 p.m. on the north side of Chicago.
