Hawks Take #12 Loyola Chicago To Four Sets

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team won a set off two-time defending national champion and 12th-ranked Loyola Chicago, but the Ramblers came away with a 25-16, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19 win over the Hawks at Gentile Arena in Chicago on Saturday (March 19) night.

The Hawks (15-19, 3-9 MIVA) were trying to avenge a five-set loss to the Ramblers on Feb. 6 at Pepsi Arena.

Quincy led Set 1, 7-5, in the early-going before Loyola reeled off four straight points to take a 9-7 lead. The Hawks then got a kill by Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales), but the Hawks were never closer than two points after that as Loyola closed the frame with a 5-1 run.

The Hawks trailed almost the entire way through Set 2, including at 23-19. The Hawks then reeled off four straight points on the serve of senior Ben Thomas (Placerville, Calif./El Dorado) to tie the game at 23-23.

The Hawks fought off set points at 24-23 and 25-24 and finished the set with three straight points, beginning with a kill by senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) and ending on a kill by senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City). The Hawks held the Ramblers (14-5, 8-3 MIVA) to a match-low .276 hitting percentage in the set.

Set 3 was tightly contested, featuring seven lead changes and seven tie scores, but the hosts used a 6-2 run to finish the stanza and win it 25-21.

The Hawks fell behind early in Set 4, but rallied for four straight points with Gamache at the service line to cut Loyola's lead to 10-9. The Ramblers then scored three straight to regain command and they never surrendered their advantage.

Junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) was outstanding for the Hawks with 12 kills (.667) and just two errors on 15 attacks. He added four blocks. Junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) called his own number eight times and put down six kills (.750) with no errors. He also had 35 assists and five digs and helped the Hawks hit .255 in the match.

Freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) tacked on nine kills (.333) while Gamache (.000) and Coutts (.263) had seven kills each. Sophomore Collin Merk (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the back row with nine digs.

Ben Plaisted paced the Ramblers with 20 kills (.368). Peter Hutz (51 assists) helped Loyola hit .427 in the match.

The Hawks return to Pepsi Arena for the first time in nearly a month on Wednesday (March 22) when they take on Missouri Baptist in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
