Hawks' Efficient Offense Leads To Two Wins

BEREA, Ky. – The Quincy University men's volleyball team used a couple of efficient offensive performances to win two matches on Monday (March 7) at the AVCA Challenge in Berea, Ky.

The Hawks (11-16) toppled Alderson-Broaddus, 25-21, 25-23, 25-10, in the day's first match before rallying for a 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 29-27 win over Belmont Abbey in the afternoon.

Quincy def. Alderson-Broaddus – 25-21, 25-23, 25-10

The Hawks got on a roll right away by scoring the first four points of the match with senior Ty Coutts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty/Johnson & Wales) on the serve. The Battlers (6-9) battled back to take an 8-7 lead. QU then rallied with a 9-3 run to take a 16-11 lead they would not give up. Senior Jack Gamache (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) rattled off four kills in the set.

The Hawks would commit just four hitting errors over the next two games as they worked their offense. Freshman David Siebum (St. Louis, Mo./St. John Vianney) put down six kills on eight swings with no errors and junior Jarrod Kelso (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby) added five kills on six attacks in the second set alone.

In Set 3, Quincy hit .588 as a team while limiting the Battlers to just three kills and a minus-.118 hitting percentage. Siebum finished the match with his ninth kill. He hit .750 in his two sets played without an error.

Kelso led the way with 10 kills (.438), five blocks and three aces while Gamache also tacked on nine kills (.429) without a hitting error.

Freshman Adam Rogan (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) recorded 23 assists in the first two sets before freshman Noah Randall (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) added 11 in the final set. The pair helped QU hit .351 as a team.

Sophomore Collin Merk (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the back row with six digs.

Quincy def. Belmont Abbey – 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 29-27

Coutts started the match with three straight service points against the Crusaders (9-7). Belmont Abbey responded and took a 16-12 lead with the help of an 8-1 run. BAC never gave up its lead after that in Set 1.

The Hawks rolled out to a 9-2 lead in Set 2 as Coutts capped the run with a kill. QU continued its onslaught with a 6-1 run that gave them a 21-10 lead after an ace by junior Thane Fanfulik (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Darby). An error by the Crusaders gave the Hawks the win.

Quincy opened Set 3 by scoring eight of the first 11 points and never looked back. Belmont Abbey cut the lead to as little as two points on two occasions, but kills by senior Ian Lawson (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) and Kelso put those runs to a halt. Lawson's kill ended the set.

Quincy led Set 4 by as many as five points, but the Crusaders went on a 12-4 run to take a 22-19 lead. It looked like they would force a fifth set, but Gamache stepped to the service line and scored four straight points. Fanfulik picked up consecutive kills in the stretch.

Both teams had chances at set point, including the Crusaders at 27-26, but Gamache's kill evened the score again. He followed with another point to take the lead and Gamache and Kelso combined on a block to end the match.

QU hit .339 in the match, compared to a .260 mark for Belmont Abbey.

Gamache led four players in double figures with 13 kills (.207), five aces and five digs. Senior Chris Chappelle (Los Angeles, Calif./Westchester/San Diego City) and Kelso recorded a dozen kills each with Kelso also picking up four blocks. Lawson had 10 kills (.471). Merk again led the back row with eight digs.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday (March 8) to wrap up the AVCA Challenge in Berea, Ky. QU will play NAIA No. 3 Graceland at 8 a.m. CT and King at 2:30 a.m. CT.
