Lady Hawks Fall in GLVC Championship Game to Knights

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The 22nd ranked Quincy University women's basketball team fell just short of a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship on Sunday (Mar. 6) in St. Charles, Mo. at Family Arena. No. 24 Bellarmine University earned the GLVC Championship trophy carrying heavy hearts after the passing of their president, Dr. Joseph McGowan. BU was strong in transition and held QU in check with their zone defense. The Knights won the championship game 89-78.

Maggie Cunningham was named to the GLVC Championship All-Tournament Team. Cunningham finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists in the game.

The Lady Hawks (25-5) started off hot with a pair of threes by Kara Gerbus to get the ball rolling.

The Knights (24-3) went on an 8-0 run and later completed the first quarter with a 12-0 run to jump out to a 24-14 lead.

In the final two minutes of the second quarter, the Lady Hawks sparked an 11-3 run to pull within nine points after Rachel Ruzevich drained a three with nine seconds to go.

Bellarmine pushed a 14-point run in the third quarter to increase their lead to 23 points.

The Lady Hawks battled in the fourth quarter to end the game with just an 11-point deficit, winning the fourth quarter 29-19.

Kara Gerbus led the team with 19 points. Anika Webster added 18 points off the bench.

Sarah Galvin was named GLVC Tournament MVP with 25 points and nine rebounds for Bellarmine.

The Lady Hawks await the results of the NCAA Division II Selection Show tonight at 9 p.m. CT to find out who they play next weekend in the NCAA DII Midwest Regional Tournament.
