Lady Hawks' Dance Ends in Region Quarterfinal to Drury

ASHLAND, Ohio - The fifth-seeded Quincy University women's basketball team showed heart and grit in a comeback that fell just short against fifth-seeded Drury University, 79-71. DU built their largest lead of 24 points in the third quarter with two and a half minutes to play. QU locked down defensively and made some timely shots to pull within four points with 29 seconds to play.

The Lady Hawks (25-6) played some of their best basketball in the fourth quarter. QU outscored Drury (25-4) 25-16 in the final period.

With three minutes to play, QU went on a seven-point run when Maggie Cunningham found Rachel Ruzevich for a layup. The Cunningham-Ruzevich connection paid off for a three-point play on the very next possession. Erin Mennemeyer sank a pair of free throws after an offensive rebound with under two minutes to play to cut the Drury lead to six points.

Erin Mennemeyer scored eight points in the fourth quarter. Mennemeyer finished with 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. 

Rachel Ruzevich also notched eight points in the fourth quarter. Ruzevich finished with a season-high 11 points.

Maggie Cunningham was all over the court for QU scoring 11 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out eight assists, and nabbing seven steals. Cunningham hit a three in the fourth quarter to make it a five-point game.

Kara Gerbus did most of her damage in the third quarter with seven points. Gerbus finished with 13 points.

The Panthers built their lead on hot shooting and forced turnovers. Drury had 24 points off of Quincy's 15 turnovers. DU shot 45.1% from the field and 53.8% from three in the first half. The Panthers built a 44-29 lead at halftime.

Drury had seven different players make a 3-point field goal. Annie Armstrong led the team with 18 points. Paige Wilson and Heather Harmon both scored 11 points off the bench. Brianna Jones scored 10 points.

Quincy held DU to a 32% field goal percentage and 28.5% from three in the second half. The Lady Hawks outscored Drury in the paint (32-16) and on second chance opportunities (16-3). 

The Lady Hawks shot 38.6% from the field and 20% from three in the game. Mennemeyer had seven of Quincy's 17 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Hawk seniors finished their career with a 78-38 record in their four seasons at QU.
