Quincy Splits Sunday with Bellarmine, Wins Series 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Quincy University baseball team claimed a series win at Bellarmine University on Sunday with a split of a doubleheader. QU won the first game, 8-3, before falling for the first time this season in the end cap, 6-2, to BU. The bats were once again on display for the Hawks in game one, but QU fell victim to four errors in the final game.

The Hawks (6-1) wasted no time to start the scoring in game one. After Brynn Martinez wore a pitch, Dominic Miles drilled a ball over the right field wall to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead before taking the field.

Justin Blechle led off the third inning with a solo shot to right field to start another crooked numbered inning. David Jacob doubled to right center to score Miles, and Jake Walters singled to bring home Jacob on an error by the left fielder.

Braden Shull (W, 2-0) tossed four innings of no-hit baseball with four strikeouts. Shull did allow two earned runs on five walks and a hit batter. Brandon Ley came on in relief allowing one earned run on one hit in one inning. Cole Crawford and Karl Hirsch each tossed a scoreless inning to secure the win.

The Hawks added some insurance runs in the seventh inning off a Ryan Snyder single and a Matt Hilmes single that both tallied RBI. Snyder scored on an error off Hilmes' single.

Bellarmine (4-6) took advantage of four Quincy errors in game two.

Dominic Miles doubled to score Justin Blechle in the third inning and give QU the lead.

The Knights would answer back in the bottom half with a single, stolen base, and a single to knock in a run and tie the game all with two outs.

BU would add a run in the fourth inning, and three more runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

QU finished with five hits. Only two of which came after the third inning.

Mark Niebrugge (L, 0-1) threw five innings in his first start of the season. Niebrugge allowed five earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He finished with two strikeouts.

David Jacob was 4-for-7 on the day. Dominic Miles finished 3-for-7 with three RBI and three runs scored.

The Hawks will open up QU Stadium on Tuesday, Mar. 8 in a midweek doubleheader with Lincoln University. First pitch of the home opener is scheduled for 1 p.m.
