#8 Hawks Top Harris-Stowe in Midweek Clash

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 8 Quincy University baseball team scored 13 runs in the first three innings to grab a commanding lead and eventually a 14-5 victory over Harris-Stowe State University on Wednesday, Mar. 30th. The Hawks pounded out 17 hits with Matt Hilmes and Troy Wehde leading the charge for the QU offense with six combined hits and seven combined RBI.

Troy Wehde put a jolt into the baseball in the top of the second inning with a lead-off homer that landed just under the scoreboard in right center field. Wehde sparked an eight-run inning in which he singled later to record his second and third RBI of the game. The sophomore catcher finished 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.

Matt Hilmes was 3-for-4 as the designated hitter for the Hawks (16-5) with a double and four RBI.

Every starter in the QU lineup recorded at least one hit. Brynn Martinez hit safely three times. Jake Walters and Ryan Snyder both had two hits.

Dalton Overstreet (W, 1-0) got the start for the Hawks and earned the win over Harris-Stowe (12-18) after being scheduled to throw just three innings of work. Overstreet scattered three hits and allowed one unearned run with three strike outs.

The Hawks found themselves in a bit of trouble in the top of the fourth inning as HSSU plated two runs with the second run coming off an error. The second baseman, Walters stopped the bleeding with a web gem caliber play back up the middle. Walters fielded a backhand and, in one motion, flipped the ball to the shortstop, Martinez, who fired a seed to David Jacob at first base to get the runner by half a step.

Brandon Ley and Teddy Rule pitched the last two innings for QU, throwing gas, for a combined three strike outs.

The Hawks welcome Missouri S&T to QU Stadium for a Great Lakes Valley Conference weekend series starting Saturday, April 2nd. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
